Awards given
Founders’ Trophy
The Co-Founders, Michael Swain and Ernest Horvath, donated a crystal trophy to the Association to be named the “Founders’ Trophy”.
The terms for presentation are:
- Presented to a member in good standing;
- Presented to a person demonstrating the true spirit of the Association in pulling their weight in assisting other members and the Association;
- Nominees shall be proposed by members of good standing and the award to be decided by the Board of Directors.
- The trophy does not need to be awarded every year but only to those who make an outstanding contribution to the Association in any given year.
Jim Watt (2004/2005)
The initial recipient of the Founders’ Trophy was Jim Watt for giving so much of his time and talents to the Association in coaching, advice, building our facility, repairing equipment, lending his boat and hosting our parties at his home. Jim is a fine example to us all.
Willie Forbes (2005/2006)
Willie brings many years of rowing experience to his coaching. He gives his time generously to coaching and hosting the club rowing, with his keen and irrepressible sense of humour. Willie is also a ‘goldmine’ of expertise and energy when it comes to importing and shipping boats and equipment. No task is too large or too minor for Willie to give it his all.
Deanna Friesen (2006/2007)
Deanna started her rowing just two years ago, with her daughter Zoe. Her enthusiasm and love for the sport was soon obvious and infectious. Deanna took the responsibility of recruiting and coordinating our Junior rowers. She was soon in a position to assist with coaching, thus spreading her enthusiasm and encouraging the juniors to coach also. Given the timing of the Junior Programs it is not always obvious to the adult members the lengths that Deanna goes to in order to present safe and fun Programs, often devising new ways to attract our young rowers. Deanna is a fine example of the qualities that the Association is encouraging.
Jayne Jones (2007/2008)
Jayne Jones been awarded the Founders' Trophy for the 2007 rowing year. However, Jayne's many contributions have benefited the Association over several years. Not only has Jayne acted as enthusiastic Ladies Captain but she has helped with boat maintenance, socials and coaching courses consistently. The Summer coaching cource saw Jayne turning up to help at 6am every morning for three weeks, as well as the week-end committments. Jayne also designed and coached the Winter circuit training season. Jayne is always ready to step forward with a ready smile and a great 'can do' approach. No wonder there were so many nominations.
